As a life coach and social media marketer I come across hundreds of email correspondences, posts, comments, blogs and articles, daily. One of the things that strikes me is the “Art” as I call it of bad spelling or as we all conveniently call it … “Typos”.
For start allow me to point the fact that I am not pinpointing fast typing on mobile device that may cause one to press an adjacent letter due to size of finger and/or long nails on those small keyboards. Nor someone who attempts to compose any of the above, in a language that he or she may not be fluent in.
In understanding the “typos” issue we need to look into what has been written down and react to it accordingly. I do understand that technology is to be blame in some cases such as small keyboard or predicted typing, that May or may not remember that one time we typed a wrong letter and it will keep replacing it to that wrong word. A typo should and only be considered if and when a letter was misplaced due to wrong placement of our finger on that small keypad.
On the other hand ; using wrong spelling that has nothing to do with the reasons I mentioned above is simply bad spelling.
As a life coach at http://peretzavi.com and as an immigrant, English is not my mother-tongue, I do understand that lack of knowledge, experience, training and language education may be a subject to bad spelling for some. My issue is with native speakers who writes in their native language.
Living in Hawaii for the past seven years and many more years in the mainland, I came across “intentional typos”. Intentional typos as I call them – are those words that intentionally typed to match the local broken English, local dialect and or urban slang. Again, the bad spelling I have mentioned earlier does not include the intentional typos.
It seems that in today’s world writing means something fast and insignificant to some people, and the bad, even insulting spelling mistakes does not bother them.
The bad spelling is not skipping any language. I myself is a native Hebrew language speaker, writer and reader and in addition to English and few other languages, I have the opportunity to communicate in at least four languages, and the bad spelling repeats itself in them all. Again, I am not considering grammar or even getting into sentence structure.
For my readers….. And just about anybody out there, Please take few seconds before clicking the “send” and make sure your spelling is correct.
Take pride in what you write regardless what is it for, and what was it written for. Remember, in today’s world almost anybody can read your comments on Facebook, blogs, social apps and much more. People may not know you personally and your words represents YOU, in the eyes of the reader.
With that note I welcome you to visit a calming video of Art http://youtu.be/7BhcgjdNKdo
